It was surprising he would actually write to them. However, it was nice that he heard from them. His family is close in some ways but is also very distant from eachother. His intentions were probably to just go on vacation somewhere to get away. That changed quickly though. He ended up taking a longer time than he thought he would and ended up far from home.
Someone who takes radical actions in their life must be going through a rough time. He might of been having trouble with his family. Family drama can always drive someone to disappear for awhile until everything goes down. Also, he could of had some problems that just envolve him. He could be struggling to get a job to try and live on his own since he doesn't like having others take care of him.
I agrede with most of the things on your list but one thing i didn't really with was that he was a city boy. He might have been born in a city but i think he was meant for the wild. everything about him i think just shouts nature.
